Being FAT does not look pretty

2010
04.27

I found this on the Daily Mail (UK) and wanted to share. If you think being FAT looks bad on the outside, look at what it does to your insides. Plus look at how the frame or bones are not lining up or are being warped. That can’t be good either.

Phase 4 feet first

2010
04.17

Today starts Phase 4, and if you had told me 50 something days ago that it would have been this simple to lose 30 pounds I would have told you to “SHUT UP”.

This diet does work. It’s amazing!

I thought last night I would try something a bit of the “rich & indulgent” side of the diet. I took some Chicken Breast and covered them in permesian cheese then pan fried them. For veg I chopped up an onion & zuccini and stir fried them with some natural soy sauce (NO MSG). To be honest I was in heavan. So good in fact I would not have shared it with anyone and have kept what I ate to myself. To end the meal I had some organic yougurt with some stivia to make is sweet with blackberries in it.

I figured when I get up in the morning I am going to be up a pound at least and what do you know. . . 215.4! On the money!

So today on phase 4 I want to try to add some starch and sugar. So we started with some oatmeal (twas awesome) and poached eggs (my new best friends) and things are good.
Thank you needs to go out to Brenda for turning us onto the diet and for Kelly for being my partner and coach on the diet. I could not have done it without you. I would also like to thank all the poor helpless people at work who have had to listen to my mindless banter about the diet. You all might not be reading this but talking about the diet helped me keep it up.

FG – Keep it up man. You will be fine and the end is near and it’s working.

Phase3 Almost over

2010
04.16

So 17 April 2010 is the first day of Phase 4 and I for one am a little hesitant right now. My weight is good. My  metabolism is good but it now means I get to add in sugars and starches and that scares me a bit. Not much but a little. I am going to stay with oatmeal and maybe some wheat bread.

I can tell you that food does not taste the same. I have a whole new love for fresh food like never before and while it’s super it does have it’s downside. Places to eat are every 30 ft in the US and most of them are fast, but bad for you. I think it’s time to start a “FAST HEALTHY FOOD PLACE” and take the nation by storm. Who is with me?

Why I don’t like Chick-fil-a anymore…

2010
04.16

Let me keep this post simple. Chick-fil-a used to be one of my favorite places to eat. I assumed they were health conscious. The chick is always good looking and seemed to be fresh. But after last night I know they are no more health conscious as any other crappy fast food restaurant.  It was Gino’s School Spirit night at Chick-fil-a. Hats off to Chick-fil-a for giving part of the nights earnings to the school. That is a nice thing to do and I applaud you for doing it.

My issue is not with the generosity, it’s with he quality of the food and the crap they are serving. For the record and full disclosure in the past I would have eaten at Chick-fil-a at least twice a week on any given week. Since I am still in the phase in my diet where I can’t have sugars or starches.  So I stayed clear of the usual favorites and had the Chargrilled Chicken Garden Salad with Caesar Dressing. It sounded like a good choice and seemed to be a nice portion.

First the salad tasted awful and the chicken it was horrible and could not have amounted to any more than about 2 – 3 oz. of chicken(uncooked). For a place with CHICKEN in the name you are going  lite on the chicken in the salads. I remember telling Kelly that no one was thinking “I can’t wait to get to Chick-fil-a and get a salad” because mine was awful. I then started reading the contents of the dressing and was just plain angry. Here is why:

This is what should be in Caesar Dressing:

1/2 to 3/4 cup croutons (see directions below)
1 coddled egg (see directions below)*
1 to 2 teaspoons finely chopped garlic (1 to 2 medium cloves with inner green germ removed)
1 anchovy fillet, mashed**
Pinch of coarse salt
2 tablespoons (1/2 lemon) freshly squeezed lemon juice***
3 drops Worcestershire sauce
6 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
4 tablespoons (1/4 cup) freshly grated Parmesan cheese (Parmigiano Reggiano), divided
Coarsely ground black pepper

That all seems pretty straight forward. Good ingredients and nothing out of line with some nice spices. You can make it one of a hundred ways but this way seems to be the most common.

What that said this is what Chick-fil-a puts in it’s dressing:

Soybean oil, water, egg yolk, lemon juice concentrate, white wine, and distilled vinegars, spices (including mustard seed), salt, parmesan cheese (part-skim milk, cheese culture, salt, enzymes), garlic*, onion*, olive oil, sodium benzoate and potassium sorbate added as preservatives, xanthan gum, molasses, corn syrup, natural flavor, propylene gylcol alginate, caramel color, sugar, calcium disodium EDTA added to protect flavor, anchovies, tamarind.

Really? Do you need to add SUGAR? MOLASSES? & CORN SYRUP? Really? Why? Why would you need to put that shit in your dressing? Why would you think that is healthy for anyone?

I’m sorry to have to do this to an old friend but that is just down right bad. Chick-fill-a talks a good game but is still faking it like everyone else int he evil fast food industry. Even the healthy food is full of sugar and corn syrup. I urge you to fix this as more and more people get smart about food you will continue to lose customers.

The moral of this story is no one in the eat out food industry cares about you or what you are eating. They are all faking it. I am starting to think the only person I can trust with my food is me. The other problem is now we have to convenience everyone else of this fact.

Farewell Chick-Fil-A, I think last night was the last time I will darken your door.

McHealthy Food not so good or healthy…

2010
04.09

Today while we were out we went to McHealthy in Charlotte, NC. We are looking for good places to eat. There are plenty of places to eat, but none that are good & healthy. We saw McHealthy one day driving by and thought we should check it out and we did. To start off the name is catchy and they are in a pretty decent location in a new area south of Charlotte. It’s inside is small but not crowded. The people in there were friendly, and that is when it all starts to go wrong I think.

The cost for 3 people(2 adults and 1 eight year old) to have lunch was over $25. Now I am all for eating healthy but that is a bit much for me. Granted we did order salads and soups, but we will cover that later. The preparation took forever. Not to say fresh is quick but for a good five minutes the owner wandered around not doing much of anything while the person helping here struggled to complete anything on her own. Maybe she was new or just over worked, but with only 3 customers in the place when we showed up they were not busy. The three people in there had already eaten. So we were the only new people to take care of almost the entire time we were there.

What did we order:

Gino had the special, Turkey Wrap
Kelly and I had salads and the special, Fresh Tomato Basil soup.
In the cooler were sodas that were sweetened by stivia which we had as well.

So with that said the salads where ok. I could have made the same thing at home for less than $5. Gino’s wrap looked good and he seemed to like it. The “Fresh Tomato & Basil Soup” was late arriving at the table, and some 5 minutes after she gave us the salads, then asked if we would let her know when we wanted them, which ment…I forgot them even thought Kelly had asked for them when the salads came out.

As the soup arrived I had a flash back momnet. It smelled like soup from when I was a kid, and you are thinking now this is a good thing, but you would be wrong. It was Campbells Canned Tomato soup with little chunks of freash tomato tossed in and heated in the micro…that really pissed me off.

To top it off the little bit of soup that was offered between the two bowls could not have even been one can of soup. And it was bad enough she gave is canned eighty-eight cent soup with bit of tomato, then there was no basil in it at all. If I wanted crappy processed Campbell’s tomato soup I could have gotten over 9 cans for what you charged me for less than half a can.

Let me recommend McHealthy’s if you have $30 dollars you need to piss away on a lunch that will make you wish you had skipped lunch. It was disappointing and I assure you we will not be going back.

Sadly the owner mentioned that she was about to open 2 more locations and to that I say you need to wok the kinks out of your operation first as it’s not going to do as well as you think. Slow and not a good value at all.

The best thing is the web site, while it is broken the get a point for running REDHAT. To bad REDHAT can’t fix your other issues.

Phase 3 update

2010
04.08

So we are three weeks into Phase 3 and things are starting to fall into place. I have a few friends at work who are now on hCG and are seeing good results.

One close friend needs to stop cheating and get on with it. You know who you are and you are stronger than that. I want you to be healthy and thin. Keep up the good work. 30 pounds is easy and stick with it. Trust me it feels great.

So my weight I think has leveled out and I have had a busy week. Still things are looking good. I have had a few spikes but nothing that I can’t explain. I know what spikes my weight and I am better for it. Sadly what spikes my weight is one of my favorite things, Soy Sauce….

Oh well. I know now it’s mostly water weight and that I need to drink loads of water on those days I want to have soy. Either way it’s good information.

As you can see the weight has been up there, but other than the one spike it’s been pretty steady around 216 to 218, and the past two days have been 216.4 on the dot. That is perfect and what I have been looking for.

Food Supply is Shit!

2010
04.08

When we started this journey into better health we both read that the food supply is not helping us stay thin and in shape and more and more information about the food supply is coming out to prove the critics right.

Companies who make mass food, like Kraft, General Mills and others are lacing food with crap that slows your metabolism, and makes you slower and fatter, not to mention hungry so you will eat more of the crap they make and complete the cycle. Not only that fast food companies, again I repeat myself, don’t give to shits about your health. They are short term businesses, they don’t see long term, only keeping you coming back for more of the food that is making you sick.

Now there is baby food with toxins in it that are making kids sick and contributing to birth defects?

“Scientists yesterday called for a ban on a gender-bending chemical found in baby bottles and food containers.

They said clear evidence from four studies linked bisphenol A to cancer, birth defects and heart disease.

Last week Denmark became the first EU country to ban the chemical in food and drink containers for the under threes.”

The only way to stop this is to stop using processed foods that offer little and have ingredients you would have to use google to find out what they are.

Phase 3 – Not as easy as you think

2010
04.04

While plenty of people complain about phase 2, and I share your complaints, food boredom and being hungry are two of the big ones. phase 3 is a bit more tricky than you think. The upside is that you get to add some things to your meals. This is a double edged sword. The next 3 weeks of phase 3 is an experiment in food. You have to find out what you body can take and what it is going to disapprove of. I have found out that salt, salty products and soy sauce (mixed with water) can do horrible things to my weight. I spiked yesterday, but with plenty of water and some green tea things are back to normal. Kelly has not been so luck and today is going to be a true test of will and endurance.

So when the blogs and others tell you to keep track of everything you eat it’s for a reason. You want to stabilize your weight but at the same time know what makes it go up and makes it go down. My other issue has been being full. Phase 3 seems to be very filling and at times maybe to filling. Learn to listen to your tummy. It takes the stomach about 20 minutes to tell your brain it’s full, so eat slowly, drink water with your meal and try to enjoy each bit. When you are full you need to stop. This practice will also show you how much to cook so you don’t waste food. It’s like learning to eat all over again. Good luck!

April Fools – Fooled by your food

2010
04.01

I had to re-post this from Tomato Talk & Earth Fare.

LINK:: Are you fooled by your food?

My comment: I am so done with Fast Food. I would urge everyone to start thinking about what kind of shit you put in your body. I know it is hard not to just stop and get your favorite numbered meal. I assure you I was doing it every day at lunch and sometimes dinner too.  If you need help understanding why it’s so bad, not only looking, but for you then you need to view the movie “SUPER SIZE ME”.

You can watch it here for FREE: www.hulu.com/watch/63283/super-size-me

I have been eating whole fresh food for over 30 days now and I can tell you my mode is better and I don’t think about fast food much anymore. I love the taste of yogurt, and fruit. I also like eating things that are made from fresh ingredients. Now we all know that makes sense. If you start with a good product and make a good meal then you are going to feel better. If you start with something that came in a can in a bag, and they produced that item using as little money as possible to make the most profit then you are going to be eating crap. Do yourself a favor and just start thinking about it. Visit an organic store and see what you can replace, start slowly and work up.

Also don’t think for one minute that McDonald’s or Wendy’s give cents about your health. They wold rather you show up once a week or more for 30 years and die @ 50 of a heart attack than come once a month or year I think most of them has added “healthy” looking items to their menus because of the outcry from health nuts. Even those items are laden with sugar and corn syrup like everything else they sell. We have been packing our lunches for the past 5 weeks and it takes about 30 minutes in the morning to do that. I can even get some other things done while I help out too. While I would love to just hope in the car and head down to Zaxby’s for my “regular” 2300 calorie lunch, I can’t do it anymore. I can’t afford it both out of my pocket or for my health.

Just start thinking about what you put in your tank. Think about your health issues and behavior issues now and wonder if fresher foods and better food can’t help with that?
